Lower Thames Crossing (LTC)

Project 

As a nationally significant infrastructure project, LTC will boost local, regional, and national economies and form an essential part of the UK’s transport infrastructure, improving connections to the region and its key UK ports. 

The route is c.23km long, 4.25km of which will be a new crossing under the River Thames. On the North side of the river the project will link to the A13 and J29 of the M25, while on the south side it will form a large new junction on the M2. The delivery of LTC is packaged into three contracts:  

The Roads North of the Thames contract will be delivered by Balfour Beatty and Atkins Realis.  

The Kent Roads contract will be delivered by Skanska.  

The Tunnels and Approaches contract will be delivered by Bouygues Construction and Murphy 

Equib have been involved in the Roads North of the Thames, supporting Balfour Beatty. 

Scope 

Roads North includes significant enabling works including major utility diversions, 16km of new road, 49 structures including four green bridges and viaducts, new junctions with the A13 and M25, 40km of paths and new parks and woodlands.   Roads North connects/interfaces with the tunnel at Tilbury.  Beyond the northern section of the Lower Thames Crossing, improvements and modification works will also be completed at junction 29. 

Requirements 

Equib were commissioned to: 

  • Achieve a Target Cost position to determine the Contingency required for the Project. 

  • Develop a Quantified Risk Register with detailed Mitigation Plans from the bottom up 

  • Develop the Projects Risk Processes, Tools and Culture 

  • Undertake detailed quantitative schedule risk analysis (QSRA) on key milestones to determine confidence of completing the works within the planned timescales, inform TRA and prioritise Risks. 

  • Undertake detailed quantitative cost risk analysis (QCRA) to provide confidence of Risk contingency and Identify the key drivers. 

  • Work closely with the other delivery partners, supply-chain and client to exploit the benefits of collaborative working. 

Engagement 

As well as providing services to the Lower Thames Crossing Project, Equib have also supported Balfour Beatty with Risk Management and Analysis services for other Highways schemes as well as providing advisory services for Risk Management initiatives within the Corporate Highways division.
